Bryan Johnson

Born on August 22, 1977, in Provo, Utah, Bryan Johnson was raised in Springville as a middle child in a Latter-day Saint family. After serving a two-year mission in Ecuador at age 19, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in international studies from Brigham Young University in 2003 and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 2007. Johnson launched three startups between 1999 and 2003, including a cell phone business that helped fund his education and a VoIP company called Inquist. In 2007, Johnson founded Braintree, a mobile payment platform that acquired Venmo for $26.2 million in 2012. The combined entity was sold to PayPal for $800 million in 2013, with Johnson reportedly walking away with over $300 million. Following his financial success at age 34, Johnson invested $100 million to start OS Fund in 2014, a venture capital firm focused on early-stage science and technology companies. In 2016, he founded Kernel, investing another $100 million of his own money to develop non-invasive brain-computer interfaces that measure electrical and hemodynamic signals from the brain. The company has raised over $53 million from outside investors and develops helmet-like devices intended to study Alzheimer's disease, aging, concussions, meditation states, and strokes.
