Drew Lane
Also known as: Drew
Drew Lane began his broadcasting career in Blacksburg, Virginia, leaving behind a job selling containers to work for $113 a week at a small radio station, where he'd previously served as baseball team captain at Virginia Tech. His career path took him through multiple major markets -- Roanoke, Charlotte, Boston, and Phoenix -- before landing in Detroit in 1991, where he would make his most significant mark on American radio. At WRIF-FM, Lane partnered with Mike Clark to create 'The Drew and Mike Show,' which dominated Detroit morning radio for 22 consecutive years from 1991 to 2013. The comedy-driven show earned multiple Marconi Radio Award nominations and became a cultural institution in Detroit, known for its irreverent humor, topical segments, and massive loyal listenership. The duo's potty humor and conversational style helped them maintain number-one ratings throughout the 1990s and much of the 2000s. Lane took a sabbatical from 2007-2009, during which Clark piloted the show solo, but the pair reunited for the show's final years. Their run ended in May 2013 when Greater Media Detroit replaced them with 'Dave and Chuck The Freak.' Lane briefly attempted a pivot to sports radio at WMGC-FM from 2013-2015, but left after the station pressured him to focus more on play-by-play analysis rather than his signature conversational format. In May 2016, Lane launched The Drew and Mike Podcast with his former partner Mike Clark, starting as an unpaid passion project to reconnect with their devoted audience. Within six months, listener donations totaling $60,000 proved the viability
